The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to halt the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant response by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible further challenges.
