The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
